Wilson was first elected to the U.S. House in 2001 in a special election. He previously served on the Congressional staffs of Strom Thurmond and Floyd Spence. Before his election to the U.S. House, he was a member of the South Carolina State Senate for 17 years.

Wilson was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He earned his B.A. from Washington and Lee University in 1969 and his J.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1972.
