Prior to his election to the U.S. House, Hudson served as chief of staff for Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Texas), Rep. John Carter (R-Texas), and Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.). He was the communications director of the North Carolina Republican Party in the mid 1990s.

Hudson grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina. He got started in politics early on, helping with his grandfather's city council campaign in Roanoke Rapids. He also served as the student-body president at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. He graduated with degrees in history and political science. After graduation, he worked as a staffer in Washington, D.C.
