Nunn was a Republican member of the Iowa House of Representatives, representing District 30 from 2015 to 2019. Nunn initially ran for re-election in 2018. He withdrew from the race for the District 30 seat in the Iowa House of Representatives after he advanced from the primary on June 5, 2018.

Zach Nunn served in the U.S. Air Force. Nunn earned a bachelor's degree in political science and international relations from Drake University in 2002, a master's degree in military operational art and science from the U.S. Air Force Air Command and Staff College, and a master's degree in international relations and national security studies from Cambridge University in 2007. His career experience includes working as an adjunct professor in cybersecurity and national policy from Drake University, the director of business development with SimSpace Corporation, the chief operations officer and a national counterintelligence officer with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the director of cybersecurity policy and engagement on the White House National Security Council.
