Andy Barr, Representative from Kentucky's 6th District

Andy Barr (Republican Party) is a member of the U.S. House, representing Kentucky's 6th Congressional District. He assumed office on January 3, 2013. His current term ends on January 3, 2025.

Barr (Republican Party) is running for re-election to the U.S. House to represent Kentucky's 6th Congressional District. He declared candidacy for the Republican primary scheduled on May 21, 2024.

At the start of the 116th Congress, Barr was named ranking member of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the House Financial Services Committee. In a statement, Barr said his appointment was because of his personality. "I have a temperament that Republican leadership thinks will serve the committee well in what could otherwise be a fairly adversarial situation, given the personalities involved," he said.

In a November 2018 article, the Lexington Herald-Leader called Barr "a true conservative . . . a loyal Republican." It noted that Barr had been a consistent Republican vote in Congress. Based on analysis by FiveThirtyEight, Barr voted with Speaker Paul Ryan (R) 85 percent of the time.

Barr grew up in Lexington, Kentucky and attended the University of Virginia to obtain his undergraduate degree in government and philosophy. Following his graduation, he worked as a legislative assistant for then-Representative Jim Talent from Missouri. After that, he attended the University of Kentucky and earned a J.D. Barr began practicing as an attorney after his graduation from law school. He also taught constitutional and administrative law part time at Morehead State University. Barr briefly worked as the deputy general counsel to former Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher.
