Cárdenas (Democratic Party) is running for re-election to the U.S. House to represent California's 29th Congressional District. He declared candidacy for the primary scheduled on March 5, 2024.

Cárdenas first won election to the seat in 2012. Prior to his service in the U.S. House, Cárdenas served in the California State Assembly from 1996 to 2002. He was then a member of the Los Angeles City Council from 2004 to 2012.

Cárdenas was mentioned during the wave of sexual assault and misconduct allegations in 2018. A lawsuit filed April 27, 2018, alleged that Cárdenas sexually abused a 16-year-old girl in 2007. Cárdenas denied the accusations.
