Garret Graves (Republican Party) is a member of the U.S. House, representing Louisiana's 6th Congressional District. He assumed office on January 3, 2015. His current term ends on January 3, 2025.
Graves (Republican Party) won re-election to the U.S. House to represent Louisiana's 6th Congressional District outright in the primary on November 8, 2022, after the general election was canceled.
Graves was first elected to Congress in 2014. He was elected to replace Bill Cassidy (R), who won election to the U.S. Senate that year.
According to the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report, Graves is known for focusing his policy efforts on water- and transportation-related issues. In December 2018, Graves threatened to sue the Department of Housing and Urban Development due to delays in delivering relief to 2016 flood victims.
Graves was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and attended Catholic High School. Between 1990 and 1996, he attended the University of Alabama, Louisiana Tech University and American University, though he did not earn a degree.
Graves moved to Washington, D.C., to begin working toward a political career. He started working as an intern for Sen. John Breaux (D), and later took a position working for Rep. Billy Tauzin (R). He also held positions working for Sen. David Vitter (R), the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
In 2008, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal (R) appointed Graves chairman of the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority. In this position, Graves created a "$50 billion, 50-year master plan to promote coastal restoration and improve hurricane protection."
