Strickland was mayor of Tacoma from 2010 to 2017. She was on the Tacoma City Council from 2008 to 2009. As of her 2020 primary campaign, she was CEO of the Seattle Metro Chamber of Commerce.

Marilyn Strickland was born in Seoul, South Korea, and lives in Tacoma, Washington. Strickland earned a B.A. in sociology from the University of Washington and an M.B.A. from Clark-Atlanta University. She has served as the campaign chair of the United Way of Pierce County; as a trustee of the Tacoma Public Library and Annie Wright Schools; a board member of Grand Cinema; and a member of The Black Collective and the International Women's Forum.
